How it works

Counts that match everyday drafting

Words are identified from runs of non-whitespace text. Characters use grapheme clusters, so an emoji or accented character is counted as one visible character. Paragraphs are counted only when a block contains non-whitespace text.

The quick guide

Use a count that fits your assignment

A word count is a useful checkpoint, but the brief or submission system remains the final authority.

How to use it

Paste the complete draft, then compare the word total with your target. The character and paragraph totals can help you spot an unusually short section or a response that must fit a form.

Example

A short three-paragraph introduction might be 120 words, 760 characters, and 3 non-empty paragraphs. Your punctuation, line breaks, and language determine the actual totals.

Limitations

Counts are a practical estimate

Different editors can count hyphenated terms, URLs, symbols, and pasted formatting differently. This tool treats whitespace as the boundary between words and counts visible Unicode grapheme clusters as characters.

FAQ

Does an empty line count as a paragraph?

No. Only a block containing non-whitespace text is included in the paragraph total.

Why might this differ from my word processor?

Word processors may apply different rules to hyphens, symbols, links, or formatting. Use the count required by your submission system when an exact limit matters.

Is my draft saved?

No. The text is kept in this page's temporary React state and is cleared when you clear or leave the page.
