Character Counter

Measure text precisely with separate totals for whitespace-inclusive and whitespace-free character counts.

Check a text limit

Count your characters

Add an optional limit to see how much space remains or how far your text goes over.

The limit compares against characters including spaces and line breaks.

0without whitespace

A useful distinction

Spaces can count differently

“With whitespace” includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. “Without whitespace” removes those separators before counting visible grapheme clusters, which is useful when a form documents its limit in a different way.

The quick guide

Choose the count your form expects

Some platforms include every separator; others describe a limit as letters or characters without spaces.

With whitespace

This total includes spaces, tabs, and line breaks. It is usually the safer comparison for social posts, form fields, and title limits that say simply “characters.”

Without whitespace

This total removes whitespace before counting. It can help with editorial instructions that ask for letters or characters excluding spaces.

Example and limitation

Why one character may look different

The tool counts Unicode grapheme clusters, so a visible emoji or combined accented character is treated as one character. Browsers without Intl.Segmenter use a Unicode code-point fallback, which may count some joined emoji sequences differently. A third-party service may also use a different definition, especially for links or emoji sequences.

FAQ

What does the optional limit compare?

It compares the limit with the “with whitespace” total, including line breaks.

Can I enter a decimal limit?

No. A limit represents a whole number of characters, so the field accepts positive integers only.

What happens when I remove the limit?

The two character totals remain available, while the remaining or over-limit message is hidden.
